Helping Safety-Sensitive Employees Return to Duty with Confidence

RETURN-TO-DUTY (RTD) PROCESS — DOT SAP GUIDE

Breaking Free of Addiction Inc.
Federally Qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) – 49 CFR Part 40 Compliance

Step 1 | Referral & Contact

After a DOT drug or alcohol violation, you must complete an evaluation with a qualified SAP before returning to safety-sensitive work.
✅ Contact our office to begin your evaluation—telehealth and in-person appointments available.
✅ Payment is due prior to the first session.

Step 2 | Initial SAP Evaluation

We complete a confidential, federally compliant assessment to determine the level of care or education required.
📄 You’ll receive a written recommendation plan within 24 business hours of the evaluation.

Step 3 | Education or Treatment

You complete the SAP-recommended program through an approved provider.
📤 Verification of completion must be sent directly to the SAP for review.
💡 Need help finding a program? We can provide local or online referrals.

Step 4 | Follow-Up Evaluation

Once your program is complete, you’ll meet again with the SAP.
📝 The SAP confirms successful completion and readiness for Return-to-Duty (RTD) testing.
🚛 Your employer and the DOT Clearinghouse are notified.

Step 5 | Follow-Up Testing Plan

The SAP issues a written plan outlining required follow-up testing (minimum 6 tests in 12 months).
📧 Your employer enforces this plan to ensure DOT compliance.
